4/24/2018 Parts LingoSo you get your estimate for repairs. As you are reviewing it, you notice symbols and abbreviations that mean something, but what? Let's talk the basics of parts terminology.
OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer. This is a part designed by the vehicle manufacturer, aka FACTORY. Many times, insurance will only pay for OEM replacement parts on vehicles up to a certain age. As a customer, you always have the right to request OEM parts. This is one point to discuss with your agent when it's time for your policy renewal! Aftermarket: These are parts produced by companies other than factory. When reviewing your estimate, you may see A/M or LKQ (like kind and quality). In general, aftermarket parts are held to very similar standards as their OEM counterparts. Before using any aftermarket parts, the technicians at Jimmy Mack Customs inspect all the components to ensure the replacement will function and perform like an OEM part, in terms of fit, finish and safety. Recycled: A recycled part is a used part that has been removed from another vehicle. The use of recycled parts is common in vehicles that are older or not very common. Reconditioned: A reconditioned part is one that has been repaired or rebuilt to appear like a new OEM part. This is quite common with bumpers, headlights, and radiators. Insurance policies vary. Some allow for OEM replacement parts in every repair. Others only allow OEM replacements based on the age of the vehicle, while others only allow for aftermarket parts. The use of OEM also depends upon whether you are the insured or the claimant in a two-party accident. If the customer is the insured, the use of OEM parts is dictated by the insurance policy. If the customer is the claimant, your personal policy does not apply and you may have to work with the other party's insurance. In any situation, Jimmy Mack Customs will advocate for the best repair possible for our customers. We work with all insurance companies to ensure that when a vehicle leaves our shop, the fitment and function of every part is accurate and safe.
